Control...
Obviously skin care is very important at any stage of your life but it is especially important as you approach
adolescence as this is the most likely time for you to contract acne (although adult acne can be a problem for some
people as well).
So what this means is that acne care is one of the secret ingredients for keeping acne under control as you are
is keeping the health of your skin in a well toned condition.
Skin care also means protecting it from other sources of damage like the sun and harsh cosmetics.
Cleaning the skin for effective acne care.
It is best to use a gentle medicated soap or specialized skin cleaner for washing the face – be sure to do this
both morning and night.
What’s important is not to scrub the skin as this will further aggravate the acne.
Just use a soft cloth to moisten the face and then apply the cleanser to all areas from the hairline to the
neck. Then gently rinse the cleanser off with plenty of cool water and pat your face drive with a clean soft
towel.
If you happen to have particularly oily skin then you may need to use an astringent, but it must be used with
care. Only apply it to the parts of the face which are most oily and discontinue use if your skin becomes
irritated.
I always feel it is best to consult with a dermatologist if you feel you need to use an astringent.
Hair care is also another important aspect of your daily acne care program. If you don’t have the time to
shampoo daily then do it at least three times a week and try to keep your hair off your face as much as
possible.
This is most important for those of you with long hair. Oily hair really needs to be washed daily.
Protecting your skin from the sun.
A suntan may dry out the skin and make your acne less noticeable but this is only temporary measure. After a few
exposures your skin becomes accustomed to the sun so the acne will flare up again.
More importantly, you are also risking skin damage that may cause it to age prematurely or even cause skin
cancer.
A number of the medications used to treat acne cause the skin to become more sensitive to sunshine and more
vulnerable to burning so it is advisable to wear sunscreen and a hat when outdoors.
Acne care and makeup -choose carefully.
The best choice for good skin care is to wear no makeup at all, but for many young ladies this is not a
practical solution. If you are in the position of having to wear makeup then choose a product that will not clog
the pores – you will find them labelled as noncomedogenic.
However, they may still cause acne on some people. Above all, keep away from makeup that has an oil base. Always
read the labels carefully and use them as sparingly as possible.
Shaving related advice.
You can try either safety or electric razors to see which one is the more comfortable for you but if you are
using a safety razor make sure the blades are sharp.
Sometimes you might have to shave around pimples and blemishes to avoid cutting them and spreading the bacteria.
If you are unfortunate enough to have a lot of breakouts then consider shaving on alternate days.
Try and avoid touching the facial skin.
Ok…..we all know how much fun it is to squeeze and pop those pimples and blackheads – my advice, don't even be
tempted! Hard I know but you are only inviting more trouble because the bacterium which causes the pimples will
only spread further.
And the other thing, popping pimples can also lead to permanent scarring.
Touching your face and skin is mostly an unconscious habit. Because your hands touch so many different things as
we go about our day they become dirty and oily so it is the perfect way to spread germs over your skin.
Acne is not something that can’t be controlled. There are plenty of good quality medications that will help
greatly in clearing up the skin and fighting the bacteria which causes the effects of acne.
As around fifty percent of the population are female then why not read our next article about acne and makeup. It’s just another important step in your acne care program.
