Thinning Hair Remedies for Men
Thinning hair remedies are able to help males in a number of circumstances if you are
losing your hair a bit faster than you might think is normal for your age.
So before experimenting with any of these treatments be aware that we all lose lots of hairs each and every
day....this is a normal state of hair loss.
By just finding some hair in the shower after you have washed it is not a sign you are going bald.
Thinning hair happens when the hair naturally lost is not replaced.
There are many causes of hair loss. Some of them are medical and if you think that your hair
loss is at all unusual, you should consult with your doctor.
Unusual hair loss would include hair coming out almost in handfuls, or significant loss of eyebrows, eyelashes
or body hair.
The gradual hair loss that most men suffer as they age is called male pattern
baldness. This can begin at any age from early adulthood.
Some men lose very little hair even into old age, while others have significant loss before the age of 30.
The cause is genetic and you will tend to take after other men in your family in this, although not necessarily
your father. You may carry more inherited traits from your mother's father or other male relatives.
Male pattern baldness usually takes one of two main forms.
Either the hair will be mainly lost from the front, resulting in a receding forehead, or it may begin thinning
first on the crown of the head, eventually producing a round bald patch like a monk's tonsure.
In most men there is some combination of the two, but one or the other will usually be noticed first.
There are two well known thinning hair medications.
First there is minoxidil (brand name Rogaine) which is applied to the scalp and has been found to slow the rate
of hair loss in some cases of male pattern baldness. Women with thinning hair can also use minoxidil.
The second medication, finasteride (brand name Propecia) comes in tablet form and is taken internally. This acts
on the hormones that lead to male pattern baldness. You will need a prescription in most countries. Finasteride
should not be taken by women.
Both of these thinning hair remedies have been found to help, but they can only slow down the rate of hair
loss.
If you want something that actually replaces lost hair, you will have to consider hair replacement therapies.
The old way, of course, was to wear a hairpiece or toupee, but now there are other options.
The first is laser hair therapy which energizes the hair follicles. This has been found to promote growth in
follicles that were otherwise no longer producing hair. One laser device that has been approved by the FDA is the
Hair Max Laser Comb.
Alternatively, it is possible to have transplants that will redistribute your hair from places where it is still
thick into the patches where it is thinning.
This can be very effective but it requires several sessions at the clinic and further ongoing
treatments as the natural hair loss advances, so it can be an expensive option.
A simple remedy that works very well for many young men who are thinning early is simply to shave the whole
head. If this suits you it can be a very attractive and youthful look.
In fact men approaching middle age, even if they are not losing their hair, can actually look younger with a
shaved head than with a full head of graying hair.
Men should NEVER try to grow the hair long to hide a thinning or bald patch.
This does not work.
If you do not want to shave your scalp or other thinning hair remedies are not working for you then
keeping the hair very short will avoid drawing attention to the problem.
