Hirsutism Treatment
How to get rid of unwanted hair growth.
Excessive hair growth on the face or body is the result of a medical condition known as Hirsutism.
The incidence of hirsutism in both sexes has been documented although it tends to be a lot more common in women.
Female hirsutism usually displays excessive hair growth on their face, chest, back and stomach.
The cause of hirsutism can often be excess levels of male hormones (androgens).
Other known symptoms of excessive male hormones can be acne, irregular menstruation, deepness of the voice, and
increased muscle mass.
As well as large amounts of male hormones, some instances of hirsutism can be caused by hair follicles
overreacting to the minute quantities of male hormones which naturally occur in women.
It is also known that some medications, notably birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, and anabolic
steroids, can cause temporary hirsutism symptoms to appear. They will normally go away when you stop taking the
medications.
Other evidence available indicates hirsutism could well be hereditary as symptoms have been observed appearing
in multiple generations of females.
Hirsutism should not be confused with Hypertrichosis which is a condition where excessive hair growth occurs in
areas of the body where visible hair is not normally present.
Hirsutism Treatment
It is known that excessive male hormones can be triggered by people being overweight.
So if you are carrying a bit too much excess weight then see a medical professional for a proper diet and
exercise plan. By changing your habits your hormone levels should decrease as you lose weight. Shaving the affected
areas is also a solution, but those areas must be shaved regularly if you want to avoid the appearance of
'stubble'.
Some other good solutions are depilatories and hair removal creams. But make sure you test your skin's reaction
to these chemicals by applying a small dab to the inside of your wrist and waiting for at least 24 hours to see if
you have any allergic skin reaction.
Other people prefer to use a bleaching product which makes the hair pretty much invisible. Like depilatories,
you could experience a reaction, so apply a small amount as a test and wait 24 hours.
One thing to avoid is plucking or waxing the affected areas as this can actually stimulate hair growth by
increasing blood flow which is the exact opposite of what you are aiming for.
Another way people attack the problem is to opt for either electrolysis, which works by killing the hair
follicle with a small charge of electricity, or laser hair removal. This uses a tiny laser beam to destroy the
follicles causing the hair to fall out.
Both of these methods can be expensive and side effects can include rash, skin discoloration, and scaring. From
what we have heard the home electrolysis kits are generally ineffective.
Anti-androgen medication prescribed by your doctor is another option for hirsutism treatment.
This remedy will reduce male hormone levels and, eventually, slow down the growth of new hair.
In the end, whatever methods of treatment you decide to choose just remember hirsutism does not have to
go untreated.
You do not have to live with the embarrassment of excessive hair growth.
