Tips for Learning How to Handle Stress
Everyone gets stressed at some stage or another.
It might only be a bit of stress occasionally or it might be vast quantities each and every
week.
People do not realise how much of an impact it can have on you so you need to start and
learn some techniques on how to handle stress.
If you don’t learn how to cope with stress it can affect your physical well being, your thoughts
and send your emotions to the extreme.
There are symptoms of stress such as not feeling like eating or perpetually feeling like eating,
always feeling tired, wanting to sleep all the time whether or not you are tired, headaches, crying but not knowing
why and abuse of alcohol or drugs.
There are many ways of avoiding stress or stressful situations.
Often people are stressed out because the goals they have set for themselves are too hard.
Try setting some more realistic ones whether it is for work, a relationship or just tidying up a room at home.
You need to learn how to prioritize.
And more importantly…..you have to learn how to say “no”.
When you start to feel the worry come on, just say to yourself (aloud if necessary) “Don’t sweat
the small stuff”. Is what you are worrying about really worth all you think it is?
You could try helping other people because seeing things from someone else’s point of view often
helps you see your own problems more clearly. When you see what other people have to handle, it can make your
own problem seem so much smaller.
Everyone has sources which can trigger their stress all too easily.
It can be being caught in early morning traffic or hearing yelling, family problems and a major one
includes not having enough money to pay for bills.
Usually when your stress is triggered the best idea is to get it early before more problems appear
to pile up before your eyes. You should try talking to someone you know well and can trust to be
patient. You like to support you friends and family so don’t feel like you are a problem if you have to rely
on them once in a while.
If you have a stressful job it is a good idea each day to have somewhere you can go to relax and
sit quietly for 10 or fifteen minutes without being disturbed….this is your own little bit of quiet time.
Ask for support.
If stress makes you very emotional – especially if it is angry emotion, a good tactic is to slowly
count to 10 before you have a tantrum or take matters into your own hands.
Think before you talk.
If you are unfit or do not eat well, this can increase your stress. Try going for a walk
every day or so and be consistent with some healthy meals.
If you can recognise the signs, it is impossible to fix stress.
How does it affect you?
If you are having trouble dealing with your problems, or just need to vent your emotions to
someone, try seeing a trained therapist. It is nothing to be ashamed of. They are there to listen to
you and help. Often all you need is to be able to tell someone what the problem is and then they will make a
few suggestions which are just right for you.
There is no shame in asking for help when you need it.
If you are stressed for too long, you can end up with physical problems, mental problems or both
together……this will then affect your well being, relationships and work so as you can see it is well worth
learning how to handle stress.
