Teeth Whitener and Discoloration
I am sure you will already know the causes of teeth
discolorationcan be many and varied.
The poor visual appearance of the enamel on one’s teeth is usually the reason why people seek teeth whitener
treatments and products.
It can also greatly affect our confidence and self esteem both socially and in the work place.
Teeth whitening and bleaching have become very popular in places like California and Miami
where many of the people are involved in high profile occupations that require them to look their absolute best at
all times.
While some causes of teeth discoloration can be avoided others are just part and parcel of aging. Some people
naturally have more yellow or grey teeth than others while others may in fact suffer forms of congenital
discoloration.
Most teeth whitening methods are designed to act on bleaching and changing the color of
the enamel. This outer layer of the tooth in most adult’s mouths is a somewhat worn and thin layer.
Dentin is the main part of a tooth over which the enamel lies to protect it. If there is too much damage to the
enamel the dentine will be exposed causing greyish areas on your teeth as well as tooth sensitivity.
Loss of essential enamel will increase the risk of tooth decay which will result in cavities.
Unfortunately tooth enamel is porous which means food and substances left behind in our mouths after eating and
drinking can work their way into and stain the enamel layer.
It is good for you to know…..teeth are not totally vulnerable to attack.
Naturally tooth enamel has a thin protective layer over it, however it is easily broken down by heat, cold, or
sustained contact by sugars or other sticky foods because these form a layer on top of the teeth as you chew.
If you are seeking whiter teeth the first step you should take is to cease doing the things that are causing
them to yellow and darken.
The major cause of teeth discoloration is aging, which unfortunately cannot be eliminated.
However if you are a smoker, then certainly ceasing this habit will help to avoid nicotine and tar staining as
well as improve your general well being. It goes without saying that chewing tobacco is even worst for causing
tooth staining.
Tartar build-up on teeth can also cause an almost black type of surface staining.
Some foods like dried fruits and even some grains will increase tartar on teeth.
Illness and disease also have a major effect on the condition and colour of our teeth. Certain medications like
antibiotics can cause staining and loss of enamel, therefore it is advised that sufferer’s visit their dentist
regularly.
Most tooth discoloration is in actual fact harmless to our health (which is good news), but it can certainly
take a toll on our personal confidence and social acceptance by others.
The biggest culprits that cause staining and yellowing of our teeth are common drinks such as tea, coffee, red
wine as well as colored soda drinks and colas which contain dyes (in other words….all the things we love to
have….but shouldn’t).
But you don’t have to give up everything….a moderate amount of most things won’t have much of an effect, however
some people tend to drink excessive amounts daily which over the long term has a major effect on their oral health
so in turn they end up needing a teeth whitener.
